He served in World War I and after his service was said to be shell-shocked. He wandered around New York State for some number of years after being discharged and did not know who he was. The military wrote to James Alvis Cress and told him of the situation. Joe was brought to Pulaski co., KY and then stayed with James Alvis. (SV-596)
