During the Civil War he served in a local regiment for the Union. He served in the 13th TN Cavalry. He was mustered in at Strawberry Plains, Knox Co., TN in late Oct. 1863. This regiment was mustered out at Knoxville on Sep. 5, 1865. The regiment was commanded by Col. John K. Miller. They participated in the attack at Saltville, VA (2 Oct. 1864) which was repulsed and were defeated at Bull’s Gap. Participated in successful attack at Saltville in Dec. 1864 and also wrecked iron forges in Smyth Co., VA. The regiment first reported to General Burbridge then later General Stoneman. Daniel was a private (later sergeant) in company D. He was badly injured during action at Morristown on 28 Oct. 1864 when his horse stumbled (while crossing a swamp) throwing him hard against the saddle horn injuring his hip and testicles. This injury plagued him the rest of his life limiting his ability to do manual work. (SV-184)
