Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman says that Thomas and Nellie (Feathers) Clarkston are the parents of Rachel. (SV-717)

When his father, George M. was hung in Jonesborough, NC in 1787, Thomas was taken by the court and “bound out”. This was the custom to take the child from the widowed mother and place them with another family to raise and learn a trade. Late when he came of age, his foster family petitioned the court for re-inbursement for their expenses in caring for him. His father’s estate had insufficient funds so Tom was required to work for some years paying off this debt. Prior to paying off this debt he left the Jonesborough area making him a “wanted” man. Oral tradition from Matt Clarkston family as told by A. Hobbs. (SV-721)
