1898 He was an account of his family background to Rev. Jay Dickey (SV-1621.6): “I was born where I now live Feb. 21, 1816. My father’s name was Thaddeus Lewis, my mother Polly Roark. My father was born in Ashe Co., NC. He came to Poor Fork of the Cumberland and raised a crop, then came back here. He then went back and brought my grandfather James Lewis to this place. My brother, Joel was five years older than I. I was a baby when my father came to Kentucky. This would make his coming about 1811. My grandfather was first married to a Griffith who bore him three children, James who m. Sallie Couch, raised a large family, and died during the Civil War; Gideon married Sallie Baker, moved to Little Sandy; Elvira married William Sheppard. My grandfather’s second wife was Winnie Henson. Their children were Thaddeus (my father), John, Nathan married Judy Stidham, Isaac married Phoebe Couch, Absolom his off-spring went to Indiana, Andrew died young having a tooth pulled, Juder married Nancy Begley, they had no children, Winnie married Jesse Bowling son of Rev. Jesse, Pattie married a Strong, father of Ned Strong, Breathitt County, Sallie, Peggy, married a Pendleton, Polly married James Henson who went to Sandy Valley.”
