From a letter written to Curtis E. Rogers, sometime before 1943, by Lewis Preston Summers says the following: “John Sommer was sixteen when his father came to America. He immediately joined the English Army of the Colonies, and fought in the French and Indian War, and other wars. He joined the Continental Army in 1777, at Woodstock, VA, in Buck’s Minute Men, under Colonel Muhlenberg, and served through the Revolution. Was wounded once. After the war, he settled at Middlebrook in Augusta co., VA. He was buried at St. John’s Graveyard. His will, written in German, was probated at Staunton. He left to his fifteen children land grants in Kentucky received for service in the French and Indian War. The change in the spelling of the name was made before his death, and the family was thereafter known as SUMMERS.” (SV-507 pg 4)
